Rapid Video Production Turn Around Time Demand
Written by freetrafficsystem on October 19th, 2009The speed of information transfer demanded by modern living is pushing video production companies to aim for and achieve more rapid turnaround times. At a recent Streaming Media East Conference. Louis Broom Manager of SMSGH World Wide Creative Services Division of Microsoft described how his company has pushed video production turn around time, to as little as one business day.
Broom’s production timetable involves 4 crucial steps. Steps one and two, which are combined, include rapid capture and on the fly creation of the editing decision list, at the time of the capture. Step three is the studio work which is based on solid well defined work flow steps that keep the production process moving along in a clearly delineated path. Step 4 is the delivery process.
Throughout the talk, Broom emphasized the essential importance of using the latest up to date equipment, “the bigger the better.” Better equipment not only produces higher resolution and superior quality display, it also frequently saves steps. For example, using a machine which gives instant compression codecs feedback, permits making adjustments to the file profiles on the fly.
A lot of Broom’s work is in the demo field. He emphasized the importance of creating demos that can be viewed on different sized screens. While he prefaced his remarks by noting this may be a little far seeing, his company is already preparing for more and more use of mobile devices for viewing. He gave the example of a salesman, who can download data once a day on his ipod, and then view demos on the ipod screen. To meet these needs, the editing staff at SMSGH take advantage of zoom and sweep shots, being sure that the presenter and the pointer are always in the relevant part of the screen. This way, even a viewer on a pod or other small screen can easily follow the information being presented in the demo.
Brooms’s company uses RTB vision cards for highest quality display, PCI slot cards, for rapid hardware installation, the E-MU audio card for quality audio work. With all of the latest equipment, his company is prepared for the challenge of capturing a video from an “older” video machine such as the Vista. The important point is always, bringing into play whatever it takes to make the capture as quickly as possible.
When working with material presented early in the day, SMSGHs studios can have the video ready for review by evening. If the project is being farmed out to Shanghi, they can transfer the video and let Shanghai make the review while SMSGH technicians sleep. The next morning, just one business day into the project, SMSGH receives the review makes the final changes, and has the deliverable ready in one business day. Pretty quick!
