Saw Movie Review: Still The Best Of The Pig Mask Killer Series

When first released theatrically, Saw stormed in on the horror movie genre with eerie vengeance. Touching the psychological fear, Saw gave movie goers something to be scared off again. Not only did Saw created an extremely tense atmosphere the moment it started, but it had plenty of gore and violence to bombard your eyes and, perhaps, the best twists to-date in all of movie making. As a horror movie, it was tightly written thriller and transferred the movie goer in the same spooky world as the victims.

Saw opened in the dark with two men (Leigh Whannell and Cary Elwes) who woke up in a rundown restroom of an abandoned building with no idea or memory of how they got there. Chained to the floor, they were both utterly confused and terrified. Together, they began to piece their memory of what happened to them as the serial killer, nicknamed Jigsaw threatened them and played numerous mind games that eventually led to their demise. Meanwhile, detectives (Danny Glover and Ken Leung) were on the trail of the brutal serial murderer, trying to save the men the entire time.

Jigsaw was an enigmatic villain of modern horror movies. As he ever so carefully pointed out to his victims, he did not just choose them at random. To him, they were all perfectly immoral individuals and he used their immorality to set up horrific situations where the victim rarely survived the trap. In essence, as he explained to the one young woman (Shawnee Smith) lucky enough to fight through his plan, life was its own reward because Jigsaw’s victims did not value it.

The superb thing about Saw was that it actually had a great plot, one not really expected and particularly needed in a horror. But Saw delivered brilliant plot anyway. Jigsaw, did not simply tortured his victims, but uncovered their deepest flaws, exploited them, and punished them painfully. They were given choices, often both ending in some sort of tragedy, but the sheer cruelty was just mind-blowing and a breath of fresh air in comparison to the boring, formulaic route most modern day horror movies take these days.

The movie’s particularly gory and eerie scene included:

1. The poor victim getting cut to death in the web of razor wires as he tried to shake lose.

2. Smith’s character, Amanda, cutting open a live man to retrieve the key to free herself from the reverse bear trap.

3. Elwes’ character, Dr. Gordon, sawing off his foot to get away.

4. Whannell’s character, Adam, smashing Zep’s (Michael Emerson) head to bits.

Saw is a recommended movie for horror fans. It’s an instant classic that the horror genre will always refer to as groundbreaking in years to come.

Jigsaw and Halloween mix to become one evening of scary fun. So don’t forget to try a Invisible Man costume or an Saw movie pig mask. It will scare the hell out of you.
